Abstract

Parents include fathers and mothers who are entrusted a child by God Almighty, children are expected to become human beings with character such as having morals, speaking well, polite, tolerant and able to be communicative.  Children’s character education is obtained in the home, school and community environment.  Parents are children’s first teachers in getting character education, children will imitate the good and bad habits of parents because in essence children will imitate what they see.  Children in the Bantargebang TPST environment, Sumur Batu are some of the children who are less fortunate in education.  The majority of children do not go to school due to economic constraints that prevent children from getting formal education.  Most children who are in a healthy environment will make children become healty, while children who are in a bad environment will make children become evil.  This is what motivates RUMI (Rumi’s reading house) in providing knowledge to children in the Bantargebang TPST environment, Sumur Batu so that children can know what is justified and what is not.  This research method is a qualitative case study, with the aim of knowing the phenomena that occur in the Bantargebang TPST environment, Sumur Batu.  There are five character educations studied which include the character of religious values, honesty, tolerance, discipline and communicative.  Parents at TPST Bantargebang, Sumur Batu already have run the role of communication in character education for children in their daily lives but poorly conceives by the children, this is due to limited communication skills, and parental knowledge in providing an understanding of character education.  The existence of RUMI according to parents can help understanding the character education of children in daily life.  It is important to give character education to children as early as possible because character education in early childhood is a stage of formation, if this is ignored it will endanger the future of children, the nation and the state.
